What is HypeNow?

HypeNow shows you what is popular right now in films, series, games and music — and where you can watch, play or listen to it. HypeNow is a free app for iPhone.

There are three categories: Streaming, Gaming and Music. Switch between them with the middle control in the bar at the bottom: hold and drag sideways. Next to it sit Home, HypeSwipe, Search and Profile. Which categories you use is up to you in Settings under “Categories”; at least one stays active.

Getting started

On first launch you set up HypeNow in a few steps: your name, the categories you use and, for each one, what you like — your services, genres and a few titles for Streaming, platforms, genres and games for Gaming, genres and songs for Music. Your picks tune HypeNow to your taste.

If you have used HypeNow before and secured your account with Apple, tap “Sign in with Apple” under “Used HypeNow before?” right at the start. Your account then comes to this device.

You can change everything later in Settings (Profile › gear): “Edit streaming services”, “Categories”, “Region”, “Language” or “Restart onboarding”. The region decides which charts and availability you see; not every region has charts yet.

Account

Do I need an account?

You never sign up. As soon as a feature needs our server, the app automatically creates an account for this device — with no name, email address or password. Until you secure it, Settings shows “This device only” under “Account”. If the device is lost, so is the account.

How do I secure my account?

With “Sign in with Apple”: in Settings, tap Apple’s button under “Account”. It then says “Secured with Apple”. HypeNow asks Apple for neither your name nor your email address.

New device: how do I get my account back?

Install HypeNow and sign in with the same Apple ID — on first launch under “Used HypeNow before?” or later in Settings under “Account”. Your watchlist, watched titles, favorites, ratings, play states, lists, follows, settings, bells, price alerts, Steam connection and friends come back. Notes only if you turned on “Keep notes in your account”.

I signed out.

After “Sign out” your library stays on the device. You bring back an account secured with Apple by signing in with Apple again in Settings under “Account”. An account that was never secured with Apple cannot be reached again after signing out.

Sign in with Apple does not work.

“No HypeNow account is secured with that Apple ID.” means that no account is secured with this Apple ID — or that the account was deleted. The app then offers “Create new account”.

If the Apple ID already secures a different HypeNow account, the app tells you how to bring it to this device, or offers to switch to that account. If Apple can’t be reached right now, try again a little later. If you are stuck, write to us through the contact form.

Editing your profile

Change your name in Settings under Profile › “Name”. Choose your favorite genres on your profile under “Favorite genres” — they shape Hype DNA, “For You” and your recommendations. Light or dark is under “Appearance” in Settings.

For friends and the community you have a profile of its own: Profile › “Your community profile”. There you set your name, a username and “About you” — the username and “About you” are optional — and decide under “Privacy” who sees what. “How others see your profile” shows the preview. You can change your username once every 30 days.

Library and watchlist

Save what you want to watch with “Watchlist” on a film’s or series’ page, or with “Save” in HypeSwipe. You can also mark titles as “Watched” or “Favorite” and rate them from 1 to 10, with a note if you like.

You find everything under Profile › “My library” › “Open Library”: for Streaming your watchlist, started, watched, favorites, rated titles and lists; for Gaming your games by status; for Music what you saved, listened to and favorited. The library also holds “My services”, the calendar and “All updates”.

Create your own lists under Profile › “My lists”. They stay private until you share them with friends, by link or publicly.

Once the app has an account, it keeps your library there. If the account is secured with Apple, the library comes along to a new device.

Films and series

Home always starts with the Top 10 films and the Top 10 series. Under “All” these are the “HypeNow Top 10 Movies” and “HypeNow Top 10 Series” — our own ranking across all providers, not an official chart. Tap a service under the logo to see its Top 10; those charts are based on data from FlixPatrol. If a chart is missing, it says “Charts are unavailable right now.” — we never show something else in its place.

On a title’s page, “Where to Watch” shows where it is available in your region — with a subscription, to rent or to buy. You also get trailers that play right in the app, the cast and similar titles. The bell tells you about new episodes, releases and other news.

Gaming

In Gaming you see what is being played, streamed and anticipated right now: the “HypeNow Top 10” for games, what is happening on Twitch and Steam, new and upcoming games, and trailers. You give each game a status: “Want to play”, “Playing”, “Paused”, “Completed” or “Completionist (100%)”.

For PC games HypeNow shows the current Steam price and the lowest price we have seen so far. With “Price alert” on a game’s page you decide when HypeNow tells you: on any price drop, on a new low, at a minimum discount or under a target price. Prices come from Steam.

Connect Steam in Settings under “Connections” with “Connect Steam”. You sign in at Steam; HypeNow never receives your password, your Steam Guard code or your cookies. Afterwards you see which games you own, your playtime and achievements. If it says “Your Steam game details are private”, Steam won’t hand over your library; you can change that under Privacy Settings on your Steam profile. “Disconnect Steam” removes the connection and everything HypeNow took from Steam.

Music

In Music you find current charts, new releases, artists and concerts. Save songs and albums to your library or mark them as “Listened”, and follow artists with “Follow”. Many songs have a 30-second preview from Apple Music.

Connect Apple Music in Settings under “Connections” › “Apple Music”. HypeNow can then import your library and base recommendations on what you listen to. HypeNow never uploads the library itself; “Delete data” removes the import again.

HypeNow Listen identifies a song that is playing: in the music search, tap “Identify song” and allow the microphone. The recording stays on your device.

HypeSwipe

HypeSwipe is the second tab at the bottom, the one with the bolt. It shows one title per screen — the trailer for films, series and games, a preview for music — and you swipe to the next one. “For you”, “Streaming”, “Gaming” and “Music” choose what you see.

“Hype”, “Save” and “Share” act on the title right there, “Details” opens its page. “More” holds, among other things, “Not interested” — the title then leaves your feed — and “Report an error”.

The trailer of the title shown starts by itself, usually with sound; if you mute it, that lasts for the current session. Tap HypeSwipe again to jump to the first title you have not seen yet.

What you have seen in HypeSwipe stays on your device. HypeNow counts anonymous usage statistics only if you allow them (“Allow anonymous usage statistics?”).

Smart Picks

At the top of Home, each category asks “What should I watch?”, “What should I play?” or “What should I listen to?”. That opens Smart Picks: say in your own words what you are in the mood for — for example “thriller under 2 hours on Netflix”.

Smart Picks is not AI. The app picks out filters such as genre, length or service from your sentence by fixed rules and ranks the results with HypeNow’s own taste ranking.

With a friend: “Watch with someone” looks for picks that suit you both.

Hype DNA

Profile › “Hype DNA” shows what you are into — per category and all together under “All”. HypeNow concludes this only from what you say or mark yourself: favorites, hypes, artists you follow, your genres and your picks during setup, what you watched, play states, what you listened to, watchlist and library, the Apple Music import if you use it, and your ratings. Owning something alone does not count.

“How this is counted” explains the points in detail. The app works out your Hype DNA on your device.

Notifications

The bell to the right of the logo on Home opens “Notifications”: what is happening with your titles, games and artists, notes from friends and picks from HypeNow. The number on the bell shows how much you have not read yet.

What you hear about is up to the bell on the page of a title, game, song, album or artist.

Notifications on your iPhone are switched on or off in Settings under “Notifications” with the main switch “Push notifications” (“Send notifications” in older app versions); switched off, your bells and your choices stay saved and everything still appears in the app. There you also set “How much hype?” (up to 2, 5 or 10 a day), which kinds of notifications you get per category, “Quiet hours” (10 PM – 8 AM) and, for music, “Concerts near you”. The “Daily summary” bundles everything into one notification in the evening.

Picks from HypeNow reach your device only if you switch on “Picks from HypeNow” under “For you”.

Hype ID

Your Hype ID — “HYPE-” and six characters — is on your profile under “Your Hype ID”. Share it with “Copy Hype ID”; friends send you a request with it under “Add by Hype ID”. You have a Hype ID as soon as the app has an account, and it is never issued again.

A request by Hype ID reaches you without anything to switch on — unless one of you has blocked the other or you declined a request from that person in the last 7 days. The switch “Requests via your username” under Profile › “Your community profile” › “Privacy” only covers requests by your username. You only become friends once you accept the request.

Friends and community

Adding friends

Open Profile › “Friends” (“Add friend” or “All friends”). “Share invite” sends a link that is valid for 7 days; “Add by Hype ID” sends a request. Requests to you are under “Friend requests”. HypeNow has no user directory: a request reaches you through your invite link or your Hype ID — and, if you allow “Requests via your username”, also by your exact username. If a request you send cannot be delivered, the app tells you.

You can send a request by Hype ID once you have chosen the name your friends see and your account is secured with Apple.

Sharing your watchlist

After you send or accept a request, the app asks: “Do you want to share your watchlist with …?” — “Yes, share” or “Don’t share”. You only see titles you have both saved, and only once you both agree. You can change this any time on your friend’s page or in Settings under “Shared watchlist”.

Choosing together

Taste Match shows how well your tastes fit; “Taste Match with friends” is on by default and can be switched off in Settings. “Watch with someone” looks for picks for you and one friend, group search for several people.

Community

“From the community” on Home and the community hub show other people’s lists and HypeNow’s “Legendary lists”. Before anything of yours reaches others — a profile, a list, a request — you agree to the community rules; they are part of the terms of use.

Privacy

HypeNow uses no tracking, no advertising and no third-party analytics SDK.

What others see is up to you under Profile › “Your community profile” › “Privacy”: “Profile visible to” (Friends or Everyone), “Ratings visible to”, “Favorites visible to” and “List activity visible to” (Nobody, Friends or Everyone), plus “Taste Match with everyone” and “Requests via your username” (Off or On; requests by Hype ID reach you regardless). The default is always the most private: only friends see your profile, everything else is off. Your library, watchlist, playtime and Steam are never part of your profile.

In Settings, “Shared watchlist” only applies when you both agree. “Taste Match with friends” is on, “My services for joint picks” and “Keep notes in your account” are off, and “Anonymous usage statistics” stays off until you allow it.

Everything else is in the privacy policy.

Reporting content and blocking people

You can report lists, profiles and feed entries: on a list under “More actions” › “Report”, on a profile through “More actions” (…), in the feed right at the entry, and on a request through “Block or report”. You pick a reason — Spam, Harassment, Hate or incitement, Sexual content, Violence, Pretends to be someone else, Copyright or Something else — and can add a note. Your report is confidential: nobody learns who reported.

We usually review reports within 24 hours. We remove content that breaks the community rules.

Blocking: on a list “Block creator”, elsewhere “Block”. You then no longer see that person’s lists and entries, and they cannot see your profile and lists; a friendship or open request ends. You lift it on Profile › “Friends” › “Blocked people” with “Unblock”.

Report wrong details in HypeNow’s own lists with “Report an error”. If you want to report something outside the app, use the contact form with the topic “Reporting content”.

Deleting your account

In the app: Profile › gear (Settings) › “Account” › “Delete HypeNow account”. The row appears while your device is signed in to an account. The deletion takes effect immediately and cannot be undone.

Step by step, what is deleted and what remains: Delete your HypeNow account.

Your data

Settings › “My Data” › “Export library” (“Your data” in older app versions) creates a file with everything you created yourself that is stored on your device: watchlist, watched, favorites, ratings, notes, lists, follows, price targets, reminders, concerts, cinemas, saved searches and your settings. “Import from file” reads such a file back in.

The file contains your notes and your name — only share it with people you mean to show it to. It does not include credentials, device identifiers or imported Apple Music data, nor what exists only on our server, such as your Steam data, your notifications, friendships, your community profile or your Hype ID.

You can request access to all data about your account through the contact form (topic “Privacy”).

Reporting bugs and problems

Report a problem with the app in Settings › “Help & Support” › “Report a problem” (under “Legal” in older app versions): as “Crash”, “Content won’t load”, “Wrong data” or “Something else”, with a few words. We receive your text, the category, the app version and build, the system and the app’s language — no account or device ID. If the app shows “HypeNow hiccuped”, “Report a problem” is right below.

Report wrong details about a film, series, game, song, album, person, book or one of HypeNow’s lists with “Report an error” — for films, series, games and songs under “More actions”, in HypeSwipe under “More”, elsewhere right on the page.

We cannot reply to these reports: they contain no contact details. If you would like an answer, write to us through the contact form and enter your email address.
